What to Expect During a Heat Pump Replacement in North Florida

When your heat pump starts to lose efficiency or malfunctions frequently, it’s time to think about a replacement. Since you already have the infrastructure in place, the installation of your new unit will go more smoothly than your original installation of this equipment. However, you should still know what to expect.

A Technician Will Assess Your Heating Needs

One of the benefits of professional installation is that your HVAC technician can accurately assess your heating needs. This is something they will do before your heat pump replacement to determine the appropriate size and type of heat pump for your home.

Since heat pump technology evolves over time, you might be able to install a smaller or more efficient unit.

Don’t forget about the available tax credits when looking for modern heat pumps. Contrary to the misconception, you don’t have to buy a unit that uses a specific type of refrigerant. Instead, you can choose any model that has the “Most Efficient” Energy Star® rating.

The Installers Will Remove the Old Heat Pump

All heat pumps use the same basic equipment, so your technicians will simply uninstall the primary unit. This involves disconnecting the condensate line, refrigerant lines, and electrical connections. Afterward, they will disassemble the old equipment and move it out of your house. This will make room for your heat pump replacement.

Technicians Will Examine Your Ducts

If you chose to switch to a ductless system, your technicians won’t handle your existing ductwork. However, a heat pump replacement that involves connecting the unit to the ducts will involve an evaluation of your air ducts, including checking the ducts for damage.

Additionally, they will determine whether they will have to modify the fittings when connecting the unit to your existing ducts.

The Team Will Install the New Equipment

Verify that your installation team delivers the exact heat pump equipment you purchased.

If the documentation matches and the equipment appears undamaged, the team can begin the installation. This will involve securing the machinery in place before connecting the refrigerant and condensate lines. They will hook up the electrical connections at this time.

Your HVAC Technician Will Test the System

There are still a few more steps to take in replacing a heat pump. The installers will insert a clean air filter before starting the system. They will also calibrate your new thermostat or test your existing unit, and they may replace the batteries for you.

Since 2024-25 was Florida’s coldest winter in 15 years, it’s important to make sure the heat pump functions properly. The team will run the unit for several minutes and test its performance. After making any necessary adjustments, they will collect their equipment and trash before leaving your home.
